Upright Vacuum
The brush on my Bissell upright vacuum will rotate when you first turn it on, but then stops. What's wrong?
It starts smoking when the brush stops. The belt appears to be in good shape and is tight. The vacuum is only 4 months old.
I believe you need a new drive belt, or at minimum, a cleaning. Unplug your vacuum, and take off the plate on the bottom. You will have access to cleaning and checking your belt. Chances are, you can get a replacement belt at Walmart.

The two types of Upright Vacuum Cleaner
Despite the extensive range of vacuum cleaners available on the market, the choice of an upright vacuum cleaner is still the most popular of consumer's world wide. Although there are many choices of vacuum cleaner available on the market such as wet dry vacuum cleaners, the features of an upright vacuum cleaner make it still the most desirable of all vacuum cleaners when choosing one for a domestic household.
They are extremely powerful and very useful especially over carpeted areas. They are especially most common in the United Kingdom, United States of America and many commonwealth countries. However, they are not commonly used across central Europe with other forms of vacuum cleaner taking precedence over the upright.
Upright vacuum cleaners usually take the form of a cleaning head which a bag and a handle are attached and they use a rotating brush roll or beater bar to remove the dirt by combining a sweeping and vibration movement.
There are two types of Upright vacuum cleaner, the dirty-fan or diret air upright vacuum or the clean-air or fan-bypass upright vacuum. The former is found mostly in commercial upright vacuums and the latter is used in most domestic upright vacuums.
The latter utilizes a motor which is mounted after the bag and dust is therefore removed from the airstream by the bag along with a filter, before it reaches the fan. You will find that the fans are not as big and involve a combination of moving and still turbines that work in movement to increase the power. An airstream then passes through the motor in order to cool it, and this method makes them very good at cleaning carpeted areas because of the power they can produce.
The former utilizes a drive-belt that is powered by a suction motor that rotates the brush-roll. With this method the brush-roll can often be turned off so the upright vacuum can clean hard wood floors without the brush-roll spraying dirt over the floor.
With both these types of upright vacuum cleaner, it means there are varied uses for this type of vacuum and they can handle many types of flooring system, be it large carpeted areas or hardwood flooring.
However, what upright vacuum cleaners are not good at is accessing small nooks and corners, and therefore they require additional attachments to be used to access these places that the cleaning unit just cannot get to. But even with that they still remain as popular as ever today on the market.
