Any tips for buying a good vacuum?

I am pregnant with triplets and have 2 pets and my cheapo vacuum finally died and it isn't worth fixing unfortunately. Due to pregnancy I want one that's really good. I don't mind spending up to 150-200 but not excited about that much. I get a discount at sears of 10% as well. Anyone have any good tips? What's difference between canister and stand up? What do you recommend???
edit- is it tiring to vacuum large areas with a canister vac?
